Worth More Than Gold
“The law of Thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.” Psalm 119.72
Each person has a different idea about what is valuable or really great in worth. For some, nothing means more than money: to them, it is the highest form of wealth and it is the solution to all their problems. Others place friends and relationships as the most valuable aspect of their life and centre everything around it. Still others deem intellectual knowledge, charitable deeds, a religion, or a myriad of other pursuits as the thing of most value and importance to the well-being of their life.
So is the “one thing of most value” whatever we each choose to make it, or is there really one thing that supersedes all else in importance and worth?
In a sense, as individuals with the right of choice, the thing of most importance is whatever we choose for it to be. However, that choice of worth is really little more than our personal opinion. True worth of anything doesn’t come from the value that we place upon it, but rather from the intrinsic qualities that it possesses. Certainly, our own perspective has great bearing on the worth of something to us – but our perspective alone is not the whole picture.
For instance, a gold article may hold a particular importance because you find it to be beautiful. Yet, your personal taste or attraction is not what merits its worth. The value of gold comes from its intrinsic qualities: unlike other metals, pure gold does not tarnish or corrode over time. It can lay buried for millennia and still retain its brilliance as on the day it was first fashioned into a ring, bracelet, or other article. For this and other qualities, gold is considered a precious metal and therefore ranks highly in value.
In the same way, we may place a high value on money, relationships, knowledge, or something else – but the value we place on such things doesn’t necessarily prove that they are what is the most valuable.
ONE THING WILL STAND
There was a group of Believers in Africa who received a parcel of books in Biblical teaching. These Believers were so grateful and overjoyed to receive the materials and expressed that those books “are like gold to us.” In a region of the world where poverty, hunger, and deprivation are intense, why were
Biblical materials so valuable to that group of Believers?
Was this just their personal bent on what is important, or had they tapped in to the answer of true worth? Money and food can come and go, but there is one thing that will stand forever: God’s Word (Psalm 33.11).
Money can only accomplish so much. Eventually, it reaches a limit on what it can do. The Word of God has no limits. God’s Word not only can do what money cannot do, His Word can even produce the money!
John 1.1-4 reveals, “In the beginning the Word already existed. He was in the beginning with God. From the very beginning the Word was God. And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing was made without the Word. Everything was created and received its life from Him, and His light gave light to everyone” (NLT/CEV).
Proverbs 3.19 also tells us, “The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens.”
From these two verses we can see that the Word of God is the wisdom of God. Through Wisdom,
through the Word, God created all things. Therefore, it is clear that Wisdom is the principle thing. Getting God’s wisdom is the most important thing we can do. Getting understanding through His Word is essential, and should be pursued with all our focus and attention (Proverbs 4.7).
Proverbs 3.13-18 instructs, “Happy is the person who finds wisdom and gains understanding. For the profit of wisdom is better than silver, and her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. She offers you life in her right hand, and riches and honour in her left. She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her, happy are those who hold her tightly” (NLT).
Life, riches, honour, delight, happiness, and satisfaction – these are the things that the human soul desires – yet, these things often can seem like a dream, far beyond our reach. According to God’s Word, not only is a life such as this possible, it is God’s desire for us to enjoy this kind of life. These earthly joys result from our pursuit of the Wisdom and understanding which comes from the Lord.
“Wisdom is better than all the trappings of wealth; nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her” (Proverbs 8.11 MSG).
When we pursue the gaining of God’s Wisdom, through His Word, His Wisdom will guide us down delightful paths – His Wisdom will restore our health, bestow unto us riches and wealth, and bring upon us honour and favour in all the affairs of life.
Wisdom is a tree of life to all who embrace her. Wisdom is the principal and most important thing, for Wisdom holds the keys to Life in the Blessing of God. Jesus said, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His way of doing and being right, and all these earthly things will be added to you” (Matthew 6.33).
The Wisdom of God, the Word of God, is the Source for all spiritual, mental, and material wealth. As we seek after the Wisdom of God – His principles, His way of doing things – wealth in every realm of life will follow us. Length of days is in Wisdom’s right hand, and in her left hand riches and honour. When we pursue Wisdom, then life, wealth, and honour will pursue us.
WHERE CAN WISDOM BE FOUND
An observation from Job 28 reveals:
We know how silver seams the rocks, we’ve seen the stuff from which gold is refined, we are aware of how iron is dug out of the ground and copper is smelted from rock. Miners penetrate the earth’s darkness, searching the roots of the mountains for ore, digging away in the suffocating darkness… They tunnel through the rock and find all kinds of beautiful gems. They discover the origins of rivers, and bring earth’s secrets to light.
But where, oh where, will they find Wisdom? Where does Insight hide? Mortals don’t have a clue, haven’t the slightest idea where to look… It can’t be bought with the finest gold; no amount of silver can get it… Neither gold nor emeralds are comparable; extravagant jewellery can’t touch it… None of this is even a down payment on Wisdom.
So where does Wisdom come from? And where does Insight live? It can’t be found by looking, no matter how deep you dig, no matter how high you fly… God alone knows the way to Wisdom. He knows where every living thing is on earth, He sees everything under heaven…
He focused on Wisdom, made sure it was set and tested and ready. Then He addressed the human race: “Here it is! FEAR-OF-THE-LORD – that is Wisdom, and Insight means shunning evil” (MSG).
The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom (Psalm 111.10). Reverencing the Lord and obeying His Word is the foundation for acquiring Wisdom and understanding. True Wisdom cannot be obtained apart from spending serious time with the Lord – for Wisdom comes from Him.
Psalm 119.105 proclaims, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Word of God gives us Light and direction for our life. His Word will show us where to be and what to do in every area, throughout every season of our life when we seek Him and seek His Word.
There is no situation, no need, no problem we could ever face for which the Word of God, the Wisdom of God, does not have the answer.
His Word is The Source for every material need, The Solution for every problem, The Help for every difficulty, The Deliverance and The Restoration in every situation.
Jeremiah 15.16 exclaims: “Your words were found and I ate them, and Your Word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by Your name, O Lord God of Hosts.” Wisdom is found in God, through His Word. When we seek His Word and take His Word into our spirit, it will be the joy and rejoicing of our heart. His Word gives us Life (Psalm 119.50).
THE PATH TO SATISFACTION
Psalm 119.9 poses the question: How can a young man keep his way clean? The Answer: By taking heed to God’s Word. This verse shows each of us how to live our life for God and how to get in on all the blessings that He has prepared for those who walk according to His ways. Seeking Him with our whole heart and feeding continually upon His Word is the path to Wisdom and all Wisdom’s benefits.
“Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119.11).
When we desire God’s Word more than all things, when His Word means more to us than finances, or relationships, or knowledge which is humanly attained, or anything else – we will find that His Word in our heart can and will produce spiritual and material riches, honour, favour, and satisfaction in our life beyond anything that we could obtain on our own. The Fear of the Lord leads to Life, and those who have it will abide in satisfaction, they will not be visited with evil (Proverbs 19.23).
Ecclesiastes 12.13 proclaims: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments – hear and obey Him – for this is man’s all.”
“The law of Thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver” – Psalm 119.72
The one thing of most value is the Word of God. God’s Word not only brought into existence the heavens and the earth, His Word will also produce everything we need today or even tomorrow. His Word supersedes all else in value and importance. It is far better than all the money in the bank or a library full of knowledge. When we esteem and treasure God’s Word, God’s Wisdom, more than anything else in our life, we will discover that His Word is truly Worth More than Gold.
