Prosperity is Always God’s Will
(Prosperity is Always God’s Will – Part 1)
Prosperity is always God’s Will. Everything that He creates – from flowers, to animals, to the universe – is designed to grow, to expand, and to increase. Nothing that God brings into existence is meant to just stand still. Even mountains and rocks expand, grow, and change over time. God’s eternal purpose is that all His creation continues to move forward, advance, increase, and multiply. After eons of time, the cosmos is still expanding at the speed of light, new species are constantly developing, and knowledge and insight continue to accelerate.
What does all this have to do with prosperity? Everything! In order to prosper, it is necessary to first understand what prosperity is. Prosper, in the English language, means “to move forward, flourish, thrive, succeed, excel.”
Psalm 37.27 says: “Let them shout for joy and be glad, who favour my righteous cause; and let them say continually, ‘Let the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.’”
The words prosper, prosperous, prosperity in the Old Testament have been translated from several Hebrew words. In Psalm 37.27, “prosperity” is the Hebrew word shalom. Shalom means peace, welfare, health, completeness, wholeness. Shalom is one of the strongest, most important Covenant words in Scripture. It refers not to success or welfare in one isolated area, but absolute and entire wholeness that embraces one’s total existence. With this understanding, Psalm 37.27 means that the Lord has pleasure in the absolute wholeness of those who serve Him.
God wants us to be whole and complete in every area of our life. His desire is that we “prosper in all things, and be in health, even as our soul prospers.” (III John 1.2)
A more comprehensive meaning of shalom is “nothing missing and nothing broken.” It is not God’s will for us to have anything missing or broken in our life. He created us to be whole and complete. Lack of health, lack of peace, lack of harmony and unity, lack of material provision – lack of any kind – does not honour God nor does it bear witness to His desire for His people.
Psalm 34.9-10 tells us, “There is no lack to those who fear Him. The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.”
