Led by His Spirit
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalms 119.105
When you woke up this morning, you probably did not know every little detail which would transpire as you progressed through your day. Day by day, we each encounter some degree of uncertainty as to exactly what awaits us in the future. Although, as believers we do know that the steps of the godly are directed of the Lord and that He delights in every detail of our lives (Psalm 37.23 NLT).
There are times we each are faced with making decisions for which we have no immediate direction. So what is to be done during those crucial times? When your knowledge is dim, and the path of your life seems uncertain – God’s Word is the Lamp to your feet and the Light to your path. It is His Word that will navigate you through every element every dimension of your course in life.
“He leads me in right paths for His name sake.” Psalm 23.3
Without His Word, the path of your life will be obscured and remain a mystery to you. But if you will depend on the Word to be the Light to your path – you will not fail to reach the full destiny God has for you life. In God, there is only Light – in Him there is no darkness at all. We must “walk in the light just as He is in the light…” [I John 1.5,7]
It is God’s Word which illuminates our minds to His direction for every course of action.
Let us draw our attention to the phrase “Your Word” in Psalm 119.105. Generally, we often refer to the Bible as “God’s Word” – however, we must remember that before God’s Word was written, it was first spoken . His written Word is still the primary way that He speaks to us. Yet, it is not the only way. He speaks specific direction to each one of us for our individual callings and destiny through the Holy Spirit to our spirit. And what the Holy Spirit speaks to you specifically for your life is just as much God’s Word as His written Word is.
What the Holy Spirit speaks will never, in any way, contradict what the written Word says – because He does not speak on His own authority. He has been sent to lead and explain to you the truth that the Father has already spoken. It is His job to make God’s Word Rhema to you – both His written Word and spoken Word.
The word “Word” in Psalm 119.105 is the Hebrew word “dabar”. Study of this word “dabar” shows that it is very rarely ever used in reference to a written word. Primarily it refers to “something spoken”. It appears in the Old Testament numerous times in the phrase “the Word of the Lord” – a reference to prophetic utterance, or specific direction, to an individual or nation through appointed men and women of God, by the Spirit of God. The “Word” of God indicates God’s thoughts and will.
What is desired to be emphasized is that what the Spirit of God has spoken to you about your individual destiny – about what He has called you to be and what He has called you to do – is as much a “Lamp to your feet and a Light to your path” as His written Word.
When mountains of impossibility and storms of confusion rise and try to blur your vision, hold fast to the Word God has spoken to you and let it be a Light to your path. No matter how dark your surroundings may be – they cannot quench the Light that is living in your heart, through God’s Word. Turn on your lamp and let it shine. Allow God’s Word to be the beacon to your divine destiny. Let His Word to you lead you.
Follow that Light and do what is necessary to keep it shining at its brightest. One of the best ways you can do that is to keep speaking what God has said.
Perhaps you have at some time heard God speak a promise or give you a particular direction for your life only once. But if you will take hold of His Words and put them in your mouth you will be able to hear those promises every day of your life. And when you do, you will start seeing exactly what you need to do in every situation – because you know where you are headed. God’s Word to you will have become the Light to your path – and your vision for the future will have become clear.
“those who are LED by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.” (Romans 8.14)
Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your remembrance the “Words” He has spoken to you and let them be a Lamp to your feet today. Fling wide the doors of your heart to the Spirit of God and let Him flood the deepest portals of your innermost being with Light.
May you embrace His Word with a fresh excitement and experience (all over again), the joy of being Led by His Spirit.
“When He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will lead you into all truth….” – John 16.13
