HOLY SPIRIT
QUESTION: Was the Holy Spirit working during the Old Testament?
ANSWER: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit have been before time began and have worked throughout all ages.
The first record of the Holy Spirit working in the Old Testament is Genesis 1.2-3: The Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) was moving, hovering over the face of the waters – and when God (the Creator) said, “Light be”, the Holy Spirit went into action and caused God’s spoken Word to come into being, become tangible substance.
The Holy Spirit is the Creative power of God. It was by the Holy Spirit that the prophets in the Old Testament spoke the Word of the Lord. It was by the Holy Spirit that they performed mighty miracles. The Holy Spirit came upon people from time to time and they prophesied. He dwelt among the people of God even in the Old Testament – but it was not until the day of Pentecost (in Acts 2) that He came to dwell within men (John 14.16-17).
