Is it possible
to have a relationship with someone and yet not share their heart, having little or nothing of common interest between you?
The answer, of course,
is yes. This is seen in numerous
marriages and families all around us – individuals who have entered into relationship, but are living completely separate
lives from one another. They have not become ONE.
Sadly, this is also the case for many people in their relationship with God. Some
even spend their whole life feeling they “know Him”, yet never really sharing His
interests or being ONE with His heart and His ways.
Thankfully, life doesn’t have to stay that way.
I Corinthians 6.17 says that the one who is joined to the Lord is ONE SPIRIT with Him.
To be ONE SPIRIT with the Lord requires being joined to Him. But what does it really mean to be
joined to the Lord, how do you become joined?
Throughout both the Old and New Testament, the Lord many times uses natural marriage as a comparison to
our relationship with Him. Isaiah 54.5 says “For your Maker is your Husband, the
Lord of Hosts is His Name.”
One of the first things God said about marriage was – “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Gen. 2.24)
The Hebrew
word dabaq from which “joined” was translated in this verse means: to cling
or adhere to; to catch by pursuit; cleave, follow hard,
keep close, and yields the noun form for “glue”. The word for “joined”
in the Greek also means to glue or to stick. Its root word is literally the word for “glue”.
So in application, I Corinthians 6.17 is
saying that the one who has cleaved to and glued himself to the Lord is ONE SPIRIT with Him. …to be glued to Him in your heart, glued
to Him in your thoughts, glued to Him in your words and in the way that you live your life. How
else could you be ONE SPIRIT with Him unless you remain attached to Him?! You must keep close if you want
to be ONE.
In
Matthew 19.5, after Jesus had quoted this very same verse from Genesis 2.24, He made the statement – “Therefore,
what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Your spirit was joined to the Lord when you
made Jesus the Lord of your life. God has joined you to Himself – so what God has joined
together, let nothing separate. Don’t allow anything to distract or dis-join you from Him.
Your relationship with God is a holy union.
Never will there be a more intimate relationship than the one you have with Him. But in order
to be ONE SPIRIT with the Lord, you must stay glued to Him and His ways, and refuse to yield to anything that distracts
or separates your attention from Him. If you are going to be ONE – you must stay joined.
In John 15.4-5, Jesus said – “Abide
in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither
can you, unless you abide in Me… He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me, you
can do nothing.”
The
path to ONENESS lies in continual abiding – steeping the whole of your attention in Him, His thoughts,
His ways. Jesus has made room for us, and never could there be a better time to make our life in Him,
live in Him, than right now. He has all the answers. Apart from Him, we can do nothing – but in
Him, through Him, we can do all things.
Amid everything that goes on in our lives, there is time and place for Jesus in it all, if we will but
make room for Him. Not just to live in Him, but also letting Him live in us.
There is a place of being
so ONE with Him that He can ask anything of us, He can desire anything – and we will, without question, instantly
respond. No matter what He may require, we will do it – because it is what His heart is
calling for. And because it is the desire of His heart, it is the cry of ours as well. That’s
what it is to be ONE with Him.
It is allowing the will and desire of God to completely consume
us until we have no other desire or will but the one that is in His heart.
Romans 15.3 says that “even Christ did not please
Himself; but as it is written, ‘the reproaches of those who reproached You have fallen on me.’”
Christ did not please Himself.
The thrust of His entire life was to do the will and purpose of the Father – nothing more, nothing less,
nothing else – but His will only. The portion of Scripture quoted in Romans 15.3, is
from Psalm 69.9: “Zeal for Your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches of those who reproached
You have fallen on Me.”
When
you are joined, glued to the Lord, whatever is important to Him will be important to you as well. You
will share His inner-most thoughts and desires as if they were your own – actually, they will be your own.
Jeremiah 20.9 – “…but
His word was in my heart like a burning fire, shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.”
There may be times when what He wants
is not easy on your flesh – but if you are glued to Him, His Word and His intent will so burn within your inner-most
being that your spirit won’t be able to stand it unless it can give expression to the will of the Lord!
Once you have arrived at that place of ONENESS
– God will also respond to the cry of your heart. Jesus said in John 15.7 that if you abide
and remain in Him, and His words abide and remain in you – you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
The word “desire” (or “will”
in the KJV) is the Greek word thelo, meaning to determine, choose, prefer, be inclined
to (something), delight in. It is the cry or calling for something deep within your inner-being.
And when you are ONE with the heart and mind of God, you can ask for that thing and it will be done for you.
“Now this is the confidence that we
have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask,
we know that we have the petitions that we have desired of Him.”
I John 5.14-15
When you are glued to the Lord, ONE heart with Him, there is a confidence that He will
fulfill whatever you ask of Him, because you know that the only desires or longings in your heart have originated from His
heart. In ONENESS with Him, there is freedom within our own heart to be able to pour out
to Him what ever concerns us and to know with assurance that He will see to it. In that place of ONENESS
there is no question within our own heart that what we’re asking for is in line with His will, therefore we can have
confidence in the answer. (I John 3.21-22)
Psalm 37.4 says – “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires
of your heart.”
The
word translated “delight” in this verse is one of the most fascinating descriptions I have found in
regards to our relationship with God. This Hebrew word, anag, means to be soft
or pliable, that is, figuratively effeminate or luxurious.
In essence, as we make ourselves soft and pliable before the Lord, completely
and lovingly dependant upon Him in every detail of our life – He will give us the desires of our heart… He will
breathe into our soul and spirit desires that are one with His heart – God-desires. And
He will, with those desires, also bring them to fulfillment.
Being joined to the Lord, sharing His heart, His interests, His ways is not so much about
just giving Him what He wants (as can often be the case in natural relationships). When
you pursue His heart and His interests, you will run right into a Life that far pales
anything you could ever dream.
It
is not God or anyone else that holds us back from total fulfillment. II Corinthians 6.12 says – “You
are not restricted by us, but you are restricted (or limited) by your own affections.”
It is our own affections that limit us.
But once we turn those affections onto God, once we glue our heart and the whole of our life to Him, we will walk without
limit in the good life which He Himself prearranged and made ready for us to live. (Ephesians 2.10 Amp)
More than that, we will experience the holy
intimacy, the eternal Love between us and Him that can only be realized when we are ONE SPIRIT with the Lord.
Make the time, take the opportunity,
and experience the most beautiful mystery of all time…
…When TWO become ONE.
